Warm Mineral Springs: Florida’s Own Fountain of Youth

Long before tourists chased fountains of youth across the state, people were soaking in the warm, mineral-rich waters of a remarkable spring in what is now North Port. Warm Mineral Springs has been drawing visitors seeking health and relaxation for the better part of a century, and its history runs far deeper.

The spring is unusual in almost every way. Its waters stay around 85 degrees year round, far warmer than Florida’s famously chilly springs, and they are packed with dissolved minerals, more than almost any other spring in the country. Bathers float easily in the dense, soothing water, which many believe eases aches and pains.

The site is also a treasure to scientists. Divers exploring its deep basin have found some of the oldest human remains discovered in North America, along with the bones of long-extinct animals, evidence that people gathered here many thousands of years ago.

Today the spring is a gentle, old-fashioned kind of attraction, ringed by a sandy beach where visitors of all ages wade in to soak and unwind. There is a timeless, restful feeling to the place.
