Jack Kerouac Was Living in Orlando When On the Road Came Out
On the Road came out on September 5, 1957, and made Jack Kerouac famous. He was living with his mother in a small house on Clouser Avenue in Orlando’s College Park neighborhood. Soon after, by most accounts in about eleven days, he typed The Dharma Bums there on one continuous roll of paper, the way he had typed On the Road.
St. Petersburg
Florida kept pulling him back. He lived in St. Petersburg from 1964 and died there on October 21, 1969, at 47.
The Kerouac House
The house at 1418 Clouser Avenue went on the National Register of Historic Places in 2013 and got a state historical marker in 2014. The Kerouac Project runs a writers residency there: three months, rent free, with a food stipend.
