Florida Highwaymen

A.E. “Bean” Backus was a Fort Pierce painter who opened his studio to young Black artists during segregation, teaching them to capture Florida’s landscape in bold color. His students became the Florida Highwaymen — and his generosity became his greatest masterpiece.
