Salt Springs: A Tropical Lagoon in the Ocala National Forest
Tucked into the northern reaches of the Ocala National Forest, a cluster of bubbling vents fills a wide, palm-fringed lagoon with crystal-clear water. Salt Springs is one of Florida’s most relaxing natural swimming spots, named for the gentle mineral taste of its water.
A Mineral-Rich Spring
Unlike most freshwater springs, Salt Springs carries a faint mineral content that gives it its name and supports an unusual mix of wildlife, including blue crabs that travel all the way up from the coast. The spring boils up through rocky pools into a large, sandy-bottomed swimming area that stays a comfortable 72 degrees year-round.
Paddle the Run
From the spring, a clear run winds nearly five miles toward Lake George, one of the best easy paddling trips in the state. Kayakers and canoeists glide past cypress, marsh, and cabbage palms, often spotting alligators, otters, and an astonishing variety of birds along the way.
Camp in the Forest
The surrounding national forest offers shaded campsites, trails, and miles of wild country to explore, making Salt Springs a perfect base for a weekend in the great outdoors.
Bring a snorkel, a paddle, and time to linger. Salt Springs is a peaceful, palm-shaded slice of wild Florida hiding deep in the Ocala forest.
