Lake Apopka was once badly polluted, its north shore drained for farming and its waters fouled. Over the past few decades, a major restoration project bought back the old farmland, reflooded the marshes, and brought the wildlife roaring back. The wildlife drive opened to let people enjoy the revived landscape.

The one-way gravel road winds for eleven miles through restored wetlands, and the birding is spectacular. Visitors regularly spot herons, egrets, ibises, ducks, eagles, and rare species, while alligators line the canals by the dozen. It is common to count dozens of bird species in a single slow loop.
