A rescued dolphin in Clearwater Beach inspired one of the most heartwarming Florida movies ever made.
In December 2005, a two-month-old bottlenose dolphin was found tangled in a crab trap line off the coast of Cape Canaveral. Rescuers brought her to the Clearwater Marine Aquarium, where the team saved her life but couldn’t save her tail. What happened next changed everything: a partnership with Hanger Clinic produced the first functional prosthetic tail ever made for a dolphin. They named her Winter.
The 2011 film Dolphin Tale tells that story with a cast featuring Harry Connick Jr., Ashley Judd, Morgan Freeman, and Winter herself. Shot on location at the Clearwater Marine Aquarium and across Pinellas County, it earned nearly $96 million at the box office and turned Winter into a symbol of resilience for people with disabilities around the world. The aquarium went from a small local facility to a must-visit Florida destination.
