Caddyshack: The Comedy Classic Secretly Filmed in Davie
One of the most quoted comedies in American history was shot almost entirely in South Florida, even though the filmmakers worked hard to make sure you would never guess it.
Caddyshack (1980) follows the chaos at snooty Bushwood Country Club, with Bill Murray’s gopher-obsessed groundskeeper, Chevy Chase’s smooth golfer, Rodney Dangerfield’s loudmouth developer, and Ted Knight’s blustering judge. Director Harold Ramis filmed the golf scenes at the Rolling Hills Golf and Tennis Club in Davie, now called Grande Oaks, and used other country clubs around Fort Lauderdale and Boca Raton. Ramis reportedly chose Rolling Hills precisely because it had no palm trees; he wanted Bushwood to feel like the Midwest, not Florida.
The result is a loose, improv-heavy classic that barely had a finished script and somehow became a cultural touchstone. It is a fun reminder that a slice of comedy history happened on a Broward County golf course.
