Nature Coast Springs: The Only Place in America You Can Legally Swim With Wild Manatees

Crystal River is the only place in the United States where it is legal to get in the water with wild manatees. Everywhere else in Florida, in-water contact is off limits. That single rule is why a small Citrus County town has a winter economy built on snorkels.

Crystal River and Kings Bay

Kings Bay is fed by a cluster of springs holding steady in the low seventies, and in the cold months manatees come in from the Gulf by the hundreds. Three Sisters Springs, inside the bay, is the best known of them, reachable by water or by a boardwalk that keeps people above the animals rather than among them. The permitted in-water access is closely regulated, run through licensed operators, and built on passive observation rather than chasing or touching. It is not a theme park experience, and the rules are the reason it still exists.

Rainbow Springs State Park

A first-magnitude spring with the fourth highest flow in the state, an hour inland at Dunnellon. What makes it unusual is the layer of human history sitting on top of it. Rainbow Springs spent decades as a private roadside attraction, and the ornamental gardens, terraced slopes and three constructed waterfalls are all left over from that era. They are not natural, and the park does not pretend otherwise, which makes walking them more interesting rather than less.

Swimming, snorkeling, tubing and paddling all happen here. Day-use reservations have been required since April 2026, and a parking renovation runs from September 2026 into February 2027, so availability is tighter than usual.

Two Very Different Days

Crystal River is a winter trip and a cold-weather one, because the manatees come for the warm water and the season runs roughly November into March. Rainbow Springs is a summer trip, when 72 degrees is the point. They sit about forty minutes apart, but they belong to opposite seasons, so plan them as two trips.
