Creature from the Black Lagoon: The Monster Classic Filmed in a Florida Spring
When the Gill-man rose from the water in 1954, audiences gasped, and the eerie, beautiful setting that made him so believable was pure Florida. Universal’s Creature from the Black Lagoon may be set on a fictional Amazon tributary, but its unforgettable underwater scenes were filmed in the crystal clear springs of the Sunshine State.
The filmmakers needed water so transparent that the camera could capture their amphibious monster gliding through it, and they found it at Wakulla Springs and Silver Springs. The springs’ astonishing clarity let stuntmen perform a graceful underwater ballet, including the famous scene of the Creature swimming beneath the heroine, mirroring her every stroke.
That sequence became one of the most iconic images in monster movie history, equal parts menace and strange elegance. The Gill-man himself, with his scaled body and mournful eyes, grew into a beloved member of the classic Universal monster family alongside Dracula and Frankenstein’s creature.
The film was a hit, spawned sequels, and has charmed generations of fans, many of whom are surprised to learn the exotic lagoon was actually a Florida state park.
